George Walton Academy

George Walton Academy is a coeducational, independent, non-profit, college-preparatory day school founded in 1969 by parents and community leaders looking for rigorous academics and strong Judeo-Christian values. The school has nearly 1000 students in K4-12th grades.  The academy serves students from Walton, Newton, Rockdale, Oconee, Morgan, Gwinnett, Clark, DeKalb and Barrow counties. The Academy is governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees and is a member of the Southern Association of Independent Schools, Georgia Independent School Association and Georgia High School Association.

Faculty
The school has 130 faculty and staff members with a ratio of one professional staff member to each seventeen students. School counselors coordinate guidance, and individual faculty members assist as advisors to the students. The upper school counselor provides college and academic counseling.


Accreditation
George Walton Academy is accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission, Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.


School Year
George Walton Academy's school year consists of 180 days divided into two semesters. Each semester is divided into two nine-week grading periods with upper school students attending six classes daily.


Academics
George Walton Academy first, third and fifth grade students take the ITBS (Iowa Test of  Basic Skills) each November.  2013 results continue to be impressive.  George Walton students performed well above grade level in all areas tested.

For high school students, college preparatory, honors and advanced placement (AP) classes are offered.  The maximum target class size is 20 students, with AP courses averaging 10 students.

In 2012, every student that took the AP Calculus exams scored a PERFECT score.  AP classes are offered in the following areas:

English Literature
English Language
US History
European History
Statistics
Biology
Chemistry
Calculus (AB & BC)*
Art
US Government and Politics
Music Theory
Computer Science


All students are required to take the SAT as a part of GWA graduation requirements.  The average SAT score for 2013 is 1790.

College
100% of George Walton Academy graduates have been accepted into a
college or university. A large majority of our graduates are eligible for scholarships.  The 89 members of the Class of 2014 received more than $5 million in scholarship offers in addition to HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships
